Misleading Headline of the Day:

Today brought to you by The Huffington Post. The headline:

Jeff Sessions: Saying Millionaires Should Share Pain Is 'Rather Pathetic'

The story: Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada), the Senate Majority Leader, chooses to “lead” on budget issues by introducing a nonbinding resolution declaring:

"It is the sense of the Senate that any agreement to reduce the budget deficit should require that those earning $1,000,000 or more per year make a more meaningful contribution to the deficit reduction effort."

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) thought this was…well, pathetic.

"It's a sense of the Senate," Sessions scoffed. "We're supposed to have legislation in place by Aug. 2 to deal with raising the debt limit -- and that's got to be real numbers and real figures."

"So I guess we can say we're beginning to talk about something with this rather pathetic response from the majority leader," he said. "I'm not happy about that."

So, see, it wasn’t “Saying millionaires should share pain” that Sessions thought was “pathetic.” It was the Majority Leader’s action. Or, rather, his lack of action. That’s what Sessions called pathetic.

And…y’know, duh. If anything, Sessions has earned himself a nomination for the Captain Obvious Award.

I note that the byline on this story calls Michael McAuliff a “reporter.” “Reporters” don’t necessarily write the headlines, but they do write the lede paragraphs, and McAuliff’s lede was no better than the headline.
